Most people have had a personal social media account before, however when they consider using social media for their business, questions arise. Marketing MyWay® has taken some of the most commonly asked questions and provided what we hope are helpful answers.
Does my business need to be on every social media platform?
No, for two primary reasons:
- Every social media platform skews to a slightly different demographic. There are social media platforms that may have an audience that don’t really fit into your target market.
- Every business owner and marketer has their own unique skill sets and talents. As an example, if you aren’t great in front of a camera and can’t afford a video editor to make you look good, then why would you be on YouTube?
That being said, we do recommend that business owners, marketers, and those interested in growing a business understand all of the major social media platforms. Download them on to your phone, play around with them for a bit, understand how other businesses are using them and be open to the possibility that the latest social media platform may be the right one for you. Be informed before you turn down a social media platform.
Are there any social media platforms that are must-haves?
Yes. Facebook. It’s the largest of the bunch and no matter your target audience, they can be found on this social network. Additionally, being on Facebook allows you to take full advantage of Facebook Advertising, one of the best advertising platforms out there.
What should I post on my business social media page?
Austin Kleon, author of Show Your Work!, has a great decision making flow chart for this exact question.
An additional guideline for business social media is to ensure that what you’re posting is relevant to your industry. Aside from these simple rules, go crazy. Your audience will tell you what they do and do like by their level of engagement with what you post.
How often should I post on social media?
Several studies have been done to determine optimum level of posting for every social media network. It varies significantly, however if you’re seriously looking to grow your social media audience, then you should aim for one post a day. Some platforms like Twitter and Pinterest perform best when you post multiple times a day, however once a day is enough for Facebook and Instagram.
In addition to meeting those established best practices, posting daily really allows you to form the habit of engaging on social media. It also allows you to gain experience and insight into what performs best more quickly.
